THE ROGUE BY MONICA MCCARTY, BOOK 11.5 NOVELLA, HIGHLAND GUARD NOVEL SERIES, 5 PLUS KILTS. CELTIC BARB SWOONING OVER THIS ONE AYE!
This is another Monica McCarty mind blowing masterpiece so make sure you have no plans for the day! As I simply could not put this one down which is my usual for reading a Monica McCarty novel! This is book #11.5 , a novella but the length is meaty one hundred and sixty six pages! So it feels more like a full book then a short novella. If you have read her previous book The Rock #11, it falls right into place and sets us up for the next book The Ghost releasing on May 31st and sadly that is the last book in this dozen book series. So find your comfy reading area, sit back, read and enjoy the ride! I know I definitely did!
Edinburgh Scotland, 1314
In this novel the heroine is Isabel (Izzie) Stewart, cousin to Elizabeth Douglas. Elizabeth was getting ready to accept the proposal from Mr. Too-Good-To-Be-True, Sir Thomas Randolph, Earl of Moray, that everyone refers to as Randolph. He was like the Prince of the realm, all the women at court wanted him, he knew how to put on a big show and be charming, handsome, debonair, gracious, chivalrous, intelligent, sings like an angel, just like the Knights of fairie tales. Of course being a favorite nephew of King the Bruce and all the right political connections and very wealthy didn't hurt his image either!
Izzie could tell it was all a big show to impress and saying only what others wanted to hear. In other words she thought he was a big fake and didn't impress her in the least. Izzy was a realist if something was too good to be true, it usually didn't exist. Oh she understood arranged political marriage for titles, properties and wealth! Plus looking the other way after you have birthed the expected heirs while he takes as many mistresses as he desired! No fidelity and no feelings of love just a life headed for misery as far as Izzie was concerned!
Her cousin Elizabeth understood all of this and deserved better, plus the fact she was in love with someone else! The man she loves is only a blacksmith, who is bellow her class! Thom MacGowan, her childhood friend, once her brother Jamie's best friend, but had a falling out some years ago. Jamie would never approve plus Thom had nothing to offer Elizabeth, but then he does a favor for the King that put him in a different light. I suggest you read The Rock to find out more details.
Izzie herself will never settle for this type of political marriage as she wants a love match and a man who will honor his marriage vows and be faithful to his wife. She is not they type of woman to look the other way, while her husband has another life without her. Plus, she also wouldn't want an empty headed pigeon either! In other words it couldn't just be a marriage in bed only! They had to have meaningful discussions with common and similar interests too.
Then Elizabeth throws her cousin Izzie and Randolph together and she soon see's his true colors and finds he is not as shallow and vain as she once thought. Actually he is quite intelligent, honest, caring and all the qualities Izzie admires and more. He shows what is hidden behind that metal armor and more that he never shared with anyone! Passions ignite after they get to know each other and the attractions and affection grows after a few romantic interludes. Randolph would never call off the planned betrothal to Elizabeth as like most Highlander's he is man of honor.
Randolph had promised Jamie Douglas ( The Knight) he would ask his sister Elizabeth to be his wife. A woman that he feels nothing for, but would be the perfect wife for a political marriage. A wife that could look the other way after he tires of her and takes up with other women. She would know what to expect with this type of marriage. It was all perfect and practically gift wrapped and tied in a perfect bow! Well it had been until her irritating, outspoken, smart and beautiful cousin, Isabel Stewart storms into his life and straight into his heart unknown to him! He honestly didn't know what to do about it!
This only heads for heartache as many years ago Randolph betrayed the Highland Guards and he would never do it again. So how will Izzie ever put the pieces of her broken heart together? What about Elizabeth Douglas will she also leave her love,Thom MacGowen and marry a man just for wealth, title and position? but a man who will be true? Will Randolph actually put Izzie aside for a woman he doesn't care for? If he does this - will he regret this decision setting Izzie aside for a political marriage? Or will he finally open his heart and do the right thing honor be damned? For the answers and more you must read this magnificent story that I highly recommend!
Monica does it again with my favorite type of read with true historical facts in her fiction romance that pulls the heart strings. Another fast paced, riveting, heart warming captivating adventure that readers won't be able to put down! It had me rooting for the couple even thought they seem to be heading toward a life of heartache and misery! Of course a few times I wanted to smack Randolph in the head too...lol Hoping he would soon open his eyes and smell the coffee - to see what was right in front of him! I always love revisiting main characters who make appearances from precious Highland Guard books too. As you will see a few familiar characters in The Rogue!
Again I loved The Rogue, no secret Monica McCarty is one of my favorite authors in the Scottish historical genre. I love her weaving true Scottish heroes and history into her own fictional romance. It's my favorite combination for reading my favorite genre Scottish historical romance.
Sadly the next book The Ghost, book #12, will be the last in her magnificent masterpiece Highland Guard series, which I have absolutely and unequivocally loved each and every one! Thank you for writing such wonderful satisfying stories that I will never forget!
I highly recommend The Rogue you can read as stand alone or in book order, but I highly recommend you read all the books in Monica McCarty's Highland Guard series as they all spectacular from start to finish in my opinion.

Roses Among the Heather by Anna Markland, Book three, Caledonia Series, 5 Kilts
Newcastle-upon-Tyne
England, 1465
This book is about the story of twin bothers Blair and Craig Robertson being forced to marry report to New Castle as part of the day of the end of The War of the Roses treaty. This decreed by King Edward and a Bishop who looks like thier long dead Uncle Ducan, who died of drowning thirty years prior. It is determined they are both to take English wives Susanna Glazebrooke and Timothea Bradshawe.
The twin brothers are less then thrilled by this knowledge at least they are at first. The woman who both are widows, coming from bad marriages are even less then thrilled to marry these strangers, who happen to be barbaric Scots! Yet the brothers will do anything for the good of the Clan! As common practice for this time period in history to secure alliances between countries, the answer often was a political marriage.
On top of that the women seem to detest each other. So definitely this journey back to Scotland is going to have to tread lightly as their definitely going to hit some rough waters. Besides having a rough journey back to Scotland with fires, downing and horrid weather conditions.
This is a fast paced riveting adventure meaty novella close to two hundred pages plus lined with true historical details which is always a favorite of mine. Plus filled with mystery, suspense, time-travel, emotion, laughter, magical elements, passion and finally true love. A delightful truly magical read!
This is the third book in Anna Mackland's Caledonia series you can read alone or in book order. So for readers who have read the previous books they will be happy to revisit some of those characters in this book too.
I recieved this book from the publishers in exchange for an honest review through netgalley.com.

This so called Knight, Struan, ironically is also a time traveler, he too came to the future ten years prior at the young age of fourteen. Struan was in the middle of a battle that killed his sire, would of killed him too if he hadn't jumped in the portal! This scares him to death as he feels this is some type of omen telling him he's been living on borrowed time?
Staring at this beautiful armful stirs all kinds of emotions and memories , so he brings her to his foster family, who adopted him all those years ago. Braun is attracted to her instantly, took Sky in though what he feels for her is anything but sisterly! The brings back his tortured childhood memories in full force and how half brothers and sires wife had bullied him and treated him like scum!
He knows in this time it's the perfect life for him as he has a fine black smith business owns land and has a decent bank account. Nobility doesn't even exist in America plus in this time no one cares if you are legitimate or not, as no one labels you by your birth. He knows in the past he will only be seen as the bastard son of an Earl? He will never be good enough to touch Sky, a legitimate Earl's daughter! Struan won't be permitted anywhere near her, definitely will never be allowed to court his precious princess as he affectionally call's Sky!
Sky knows if she does not return home it will cause bloodshed and a clan war and besides missing her kin. She also does not want to leave Struan since opening her heart to him. Yet she does not want him to leave his wonderful life in the 21st century, knowing how dangerous the past can be. Plus the fact Struan is keeping a secret from Sky she is not aware of and either way someone is going to end with a broken heart!
Can Sky's chivalrous blond knight turn his back on his Princess? What truly devastating and difficult decisions Sky and Struan need to make! To find the answers and more I recommend you read this magnificent and astounding read.

Rebel Warrior by Regan Walker , Book #3 Medieval Warriors TBR 5/17/2016 5 Kilts
OMG REGAN WALKER DOES IT AGAIN, PENS ANOTHER EXCEPTIONAL BOOK READERS WONT BE ABLE TO PUT DOWN!
This is the third book is Regan Walker's Medieval Warriors series which is absolutely captivating has all the elements readers love the read about being. Rebel Warrior is beautifully layered with with true historic figures, facts and authentic history of Scotland woven into her own creative and intriguing fictional story! These are my favorite combinations in reading Scottish historical romance and I always find some true historical facts I never knew or was not aware of. For me that makes this book even more special and fascinating to read about.
Rebel warrior has lovable and swoon worthy characters that will glide right off the pages and straight into the readers heart! Besides the main characters Catrìona and Steinar, the secondary characters and their stories were magnificent! The handsome Welsh bard, Rhodri, Cartrìona's cousin Fia, her brother Niall, Queen Margaret, King Malcolm, Colbán, Captain of the Kings Guard, Audra, one the Queen Margarets Ladies, and adorable orphan Giric and you can't help but fall in love in with! Each character has a story of their own , but they all bring something to the table per say with their own contributions to this fabulous story.
All in all this book is spectacular, riveting adventure quick paced and one of those rare books you can't book down! Absolutely loved Rebel Warrior Warrior!
I highly recommend Rebel Warrior by Regan Walker book 3 in her Medieval Warriors series if you haven't read her previous books it is fine too as you can read as a stand alone book as well.

The Story begin as the heroine of the story Catrìona of the Vale of Leven had been out with her guard Angus flying her Falcon when Northman come and murder her parents and devastated and brutally murdered, raped and destroyed every living soul including her father Cormac, Mormaer of the Vale of Leven and her mother had been raped and murdered the only one's that survived were the younger women they kidnapped including her handmaiden Deidre. They took or slaughtered everything and burned her father's ship and their home to the ground. Luckily her younger brother Niall was out with his bow and arrows and was also spared and her Uncle Domnall arrived later that day and took his niece amd nephew in as they no longer had anything everything taken or destroyed this brutal attack.
A year later her Uncle brings Fia, Niall and she to Scottish court of King Malcolm where Fia and Catrìona becomes ladies maids to Queen Margaret still having nightmeres fro her families attack and has lost her faith in God. On top of that she is betrayed the man she was supposed to be betrothed to her father had chosen. He chooses the new rich heiress ladies maid who is not very friendly or charitable and won't even listen to the Queens orders. A match made in heaven as far as Catrìona is concerned, not realizing this man still thinks he can have her in bed!
Even before she see's his true colors Catrìona is attracted to the King's gorgeous golden scribe with a warriors body who befriends her and is none other, but Serena, from The Red Wolf's Prize brother Steinar. He had been exiled to Scotland while his near death injury is healing he secretly practices with his sword. He is instantly attracted and falls in love with the beautiful spit fire Catrìona and reminding him of his adventurous and independent sister. Also it pains him the know he was once a son of thegn and a warrior, but now as far as classes go he is way beneath her being only the Kings scribe! It will break his heart to watch her marry another with nothing to offer her like lands and even a home! Then after a heroic act and he is surprisingly offered lands and a wife by the King, but find out the King has promised Catrìona to the Captain of his Guards. Steinar is heartsick but can't stay away from the lass . The Queen knowing what a forced marriage feels like suggests to her husband they watch her and pick the man she favors, the king still undecided but agrees. To the King it is all about alliance love can come later, but the Queen understands what a forced marriage can feel like.
As for King Malcolm he often like to play a tug a war with William the Conquerer kind of playing a game of catch me if you can raiding Northumbria often. William wants the King of Scots lands and is furious at Malcolm for taking in all the exiled English rebels. As the Conquerer wanted Scotland no
doubt something Malcolm would never give, but it was a dangerous game Malcolm was playing as soon or later William would retaliate and conquer! After all he earned the name William the Conquerer for a reason!
I loved the secondary stories in this book involved secrets, secret identities, unrequited love, betrayal, orphan boys whose family was also murdered, and more. If your an animal lover like me you will love the scenes with Catrìona's trained Falcon and Giric's dog feeding him scraps secret under the Kings table. Also his admiration for Steinar and love for Catrìona.
Now you have to wonder will Catriona and Steinar be forced to marry others and be separated forever? Will Catrìona ever be at peace without finding her parents murderers and will her tormented nightmares and terrors stay with her forever? Will William the Conquerer get his ultimate revenge and ravage and rape Scotland as he has done in England? What will Giric do without having Cateiona and Steinar around once they are forced to marry others and move away? Will he feel abandoned once again? Will Catrìona ever find out what happened to her handmaiden Deirdre or will she never know and always wonder? This and so many more questions as you must reads this remarkable story about this star crossed couples destiny set in a beautiful Scottish setting with awesome dialogue and riveting plotlines. Even the secondary characters have there own conflicts and stories that need to be resolved, which I find is rare in most stories only focusing on the two main characters. I fell a little in love with the secondary character of the Welsh bard, and leader of archers Rhodri myself...sigh
A remarkable story that wilł stay with you long after you have read it definitely going on my keeper shelf! I can't recommend it enough!
