Callum MacLean promised to marry Maggie MacDonnell but with his fathers suicide made him delay it. As he finds his father’s death under suspicious circumstances. Being his father’s heir this makes him Laird of his clan. Plus he wants to bring his new bride into a safe and secure home. He feels her life might also be in danger. Maggie's issue with Callum is he promised to return within six months and it has been nearly four years! So as far as she is concerned this betrothal is over! Maggie feels abandoned by Callum and does not feel the marriage will ever happen. Not to mention Maggie had past abandonment issues to begin with!
Even though Maggie is an expert dagger thrower, perfect archer, as being taught weaponry at a young age. Yet Maggie’s life is also in danger! Maggie’s laird brother Ross has never gotten over his wife and newborn infants death. He has become a complete drunk and just wants to join his deceased wife and infant in the afterlife. Now an evil cousin Irvin wants to marry Maggie and become Laird and take over Clan. He is corrupt and depraved wanting to marry Maggie and take over the castle and become the new laird! He is despicable, finding out all the dirty secrets of all the clan members. This way he uses blackmail to keep clan members on his side and to secure his dirty plans!
Well Maggie will have no part and need to find her brother John. As he could be the answer to her clans prayers! Yet when she sees Callum she is furious. Her betrothed since she was a child and now furious! Callum doesn’t blame her but she is the only lass he will ever desire and love! He is determined to get her back and a wee wager might make it a reality! Now she refuses to marry him too. How will he change Maggie’s mind? As they are all now on the run together! Will her wicked cousin find her causing more treachery and destruction?
This is the third phenomenal novel in the wonderful “The Sons of Gregor MacLeod” series. Readers can also read this as a stand alone book too. I have read and loved all three. I can't wait for the next one as each and every one has been an absolute masterpiece. I am hoping it’s Gavin myself, as a lot of backstory was mentioned in this book.
The storyline is just so brilliant, setting is breathtaking, the dialogue is absolutely fabulous. I was walking on eggshells with anticipation having no idea what could possibly happen next! You can't help but fall in love with the good characters and despise the villains! In addition it has all the elements Scottish historical romance readers love! From a fast paced-page turner with non stop action,] to a riveting adventure, with drama, mystery, suspense, villains, murder, extortion, betrayal, passion, romance and more. Plus we can't forget a swoon worthy hero and a bold and clever spitfire heroine!
I highly recommend this novel, Highland Betrayal. As well as the entire series, as Alyson McLayne is an author you don't want to miss!
